While cover such as Office Combined insurance policies may not be mandatory, they are still vital, according to guidance from small business portal Bytestart.
The online information provider explains that office insurance can cover issues ranging from employees' personal effects to the building itself.
Businesses are also told that having a policy such as Office Combined insurance in place could protect them against the loss of up to a year's profits should an incident occur.
"Whether or not you believe the statistic bandied around that 80 per cent of businesses affected by a major incident close within 18 months, it's likely that any disruption to your premises is going to take up a lot of your time," the portal asserts.
Although office insurance is not mandatory, the guidance adds that it could help to protect businesses in today's "litigious age".
The portal notes that the types of event for which a business might need insurance cover range from catastrophic natural disasters to incidents as simple as spilling a cappuccino on computer equipment.
