The new code of conduct for solicitors places their quality of service as a higher priority than the standard of their work, it has been claimed.
According to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), legal practitioners are now expected to provide a high level of service throughout their contact with clients, rather than relying on the outcome of a case to determine their level of success.
As such, chair of the SRA Peter Williamson warns that firms should endeavour to concentrate on maintaining high standards over the long-term.
"The new code of conduct has raised the bar in terms of the rules for solicitors," he advises.
"It's not just the standard of the legal work they do that will matter."
Mr Williamson adds that the new regulations could result in an increase in mutual understanding between solicitors and clients as each becomes more aware of the other's expectations and responsibilities.
The code lists as core duties the need for firms to provide a good level of service and always to act in the best interests of their clients. |
